Silicon metal production and pricing has recovered driven by base industries, electronics, and Photovoltaic (PV) solar demand.
What about the Globe Specialty Metals and Dow Corning deal?
Dow Corning has been quiet about Upgraded Metallurgical Silicon (UMG-Si).
Propelling metallurgical silicon (mg-Si) back into the spotlight, Timminco Limited (TSE:TIM) announced “Timminco Pursuing Opportunities to Expand Silicon Metal Production” on Tuesday followed by “Timminco Announces Long-Term Contracts for Silicon Metal Supply” backing their exploratory greenfield plans for a geothermal powered, 50000 MT (Metric Ton) silicon metal production

Will German PV (Photovoltaic) installs still hit 3.85 GW (GigaWatts) in 2009? Will a period of rapid, profitable growth be followed by saturation of one or more key PV markets in 2013, a Total Eclipse?
PHOTON Consulting LLC released Solar Annual 2009: Total Eclipse (SA09) back in October 2009. While I received a review copy before “PHOTON Consulting projects global PV installations will more than double in 2010, expects price crash by 2013”, I only started reading the 260 page SA09 tome cover to cover over the Thanksgiving Day holiday.
For the impatient, I recommend reading the Full Summary and spending 35-40 minutes to Watch the replay of Solar Annual 2009: Total Eclipse webinar after entering Read More >>
Schmid Pilot Production GmbH (SPP) celebrates topping out the Pyrolysis building.
Production start on track for March 2010 of monosilane and polysilicon for the Photovoltaic (PV) industry.
On July 15, 2009, Schmid Pilot Production GmbH (SPP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Schmid Silicon Technology GmbH (SST), held a topping out ceremony for their monosilane and polysilicon pilot production facility.

Hemlock Semiconductor forecasts Global Polysilicon Supply capacity will exceed Solar Demand until at least 2013.
“There will be a surplus of silicon supply for the next several years.”
From
Intersolar North America
Hemlock Semiconductor Group Vice President Gary Homan presented “The Silicon Supply Chain” just after CaliSolar at Intersolar North America last month.
Beginning with a quip, Mr. Homan said:
After that last presentation maybe I should just say we’re closing up shop because there’s no future for polysilicon. But I won’t do that.

It was post or perish for PHOTON’s 7th Solar Silicon Conference while I was listening to presentations at PHOTON’s 4th Photovoltaic Investors Conference. Although I knew there would have to be a follow up post, forgetting my notes at my hotel kept things extra minimal.
The afternoon presentation by PHOTON Consulting analyst Joonki Song provided insight into the silicon spot price prediction of $125 to $350 for the next three quarters of 2009. Mr. Song said:
In 1Q09, even with much lower spot price, willingness to pay by users still sets spot price.

PHOTON's 7th Solar Silicon Conference
Everyone at PHOTON’s 4th Photovoltaic Technology Show 2009 Europe is still talking about Michael Rogol’s PHOTON Consulting presentation forecasting 2009 silicon prices, silicon production, and photovoltaic module production and installations during the pre-show 7th Solar Silicon Conference (Program).

Silicon strategy covers the gamut of quartz and metallurgical silicon to polysilicon. There has been a dearth of news regarding Schmid Silicon Technology (SST) since the Sunways AG enters polysilicon production business announcement and my Schmid Silicon Technology: From East Germany with Polysilicon post.
At PHOTON’s 6th Solar Silicon Conference on April 1, 2008, part of the Photovoltaic Technology Show 2008 Europe, Gebr. Schmid GmbH + Co. (Deutsch) representatives, Frank Tinnefeld and Jochem Hahn, presented “From sand to module – a fully vertical integrated approach for the PV Industry.”
Schmid has observed the Euro price of silicon metal has increased almost fifty percent since 2005. As a
Technology focused on the Siemens processFounded in 2005, the Poly Plant Project, Inc. (PPP) helps aspiring polysilicon oligarchs and companies moving up the value chain to research, design, and construct polysilicon production facilities based on trichlorosilane (TCS) chemistry or the “Siemens process”. Lead by Chairman & CEO Tetsunori (Terry) T. Kunimune, owner of the Kunical International Group, Ltd., Poly Plant Project’s team includes polysilicon industry veterans with extensive “experience in the engineering, design, construction, expansion, and operation of polysilicon production plants.” PPP’s business model targets solar photovoltaic (PV) industry companies interested in building polysilicon production plants for vertical integration and to supply partners and even competitors with solar grade polysilicon (SoG-Si)
Russian program "Silicon" (Silicon Program) projects slated to produce semiconductor and solar grade silicon When I was searching around YouTube for my own videos earlier this month, I noticed this video with the tag polysilicon: I have managed to connect this video to the SiPro Silicon Program in Russia (English, Russian). The video appears to show the SSP Project or Semi-conductor silicon plant located about 10 kilometers from Zheleznogorsk in the Krasnoyarsk region of Russia. This program may not be news to everyone. Two SiFoRUms have been held the past two years in Moscow to promote the Investment and Industrial Potential of Russian Polysilicon Production for Solar Energy.
