SPI 09: SEIA declares independence with “Solar Bill of Rights”

Many rights recognize and support residential and distributed solar installations. Invoking the power of positive language to critique Amendments 5 and 6.

In his Solar Power International 09 keynote, SEIA President Rhone Resch Challenges Solar Industry to Unite, Fight for "Solar Bill of Rights", Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) President and CEO Rhone Resch said: So let’s make today solar’s Fourth of July —the day we declare our independence from policies that prevent greater use of solar energy which Americans so urgently need. Today, we’re declaring a Solar Bill of Rights. Solar Bill of Rights To secure a policy environment that allows solar energy to compete and empowers consumers to choose, Rhone Resch declared today, October 27, 2009, in the City of Anaheim, California, a Solar Bill of Read More >>

SoloPower SoloPanel at Solar Power International 09

[Anaheim, California USA]

SoloPanel SFX1 – Series flexible photovoltaic module

I wasn’t the first with SoloPower module photos (PHOTOS: What’s Hot At Solar Power International 2009 by Katie Fehrenbacher at Earth2Tech), but my approach tends to be thorough. Following a Solyndra strategy (who had their first exhibition stand), SoloPower had one of their flexible module samples seeded in the 3M stand at Solar Power International 09 (SPI 09) along with a datasheet and the occasional SoloPower representative. “SoloPower Displays CIGS PV Module Prototype in 3M Booth #377 at Solar Power International Conference” set the stage for media, competitors, and customers to

Summer Solstice: Think Global, Photovoltaics Local

Applied Materials Dispelling and Creating Solar Myths in the United States. As is often the case, I first saw this Applied Materials, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMAT) press release: “In Light” of Summer Solstice, Americans Call for More Solar Energy Applied Materials Dispels Solar Technology Myths and Sets Path for More Renewable Energy Use mentioned in the Chip Shots blog by Tom Cheyney at PV-tech.org as “Exuberance and ignorance: Survey finds mixed bag of solar-power knowledge among Americans (revised)”. The Summer Solstice Survey,

SEIA trashes Gainesville Solar Feed-in Tariff

[Munich, Germany] A funny thing happened at the PV Industry Forum 2009. Solar Policy Not Invented by the SEIA? Legal challenges for state Feed-in Tariff policies. At the PV Industry Forum held last week before Intersolar 2009, Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) President & CEO Rhone Resch presented “New and emerging developments in the US solar market” in Session 1: PV Markets.   From PV Industry Forum 2009 After his presentation, an attendee asked: Would you tell me about the utility market in the United

Green Jobs Platform for Solar

SVTC creates Green Jobs Principles for a safe and sustainable solar industry. Call to action to sign the Green Jobs Platform for Solar. Last week, the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition (SVTC, http://www.etoxics.org) announced the Green Jobs Platform for Solar to facilitate a dialog and encourage Photovoltaic (PV) industry adoption of their ten (10) Green Jobs Platform for Solar Principles. On the heals of the "Toward a Just and Sustainable Solar Energy Industry" report released in January 2009, the SVTC is proceeding with the Clean and Just Solar Campaign to encourage solar module recycling

Of Solar Grants, Green Jobs, and Buy American

H.R. 1 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 ready for President Obama to sign into law. Solar provisions and implications of the $787 billion economic stimulus package. Before the final United States House of Representatives and Senate votes on Friday, February 13, 2009, the SEIA (Solar Energy Industries Association) congratulated Congressional leaders for working out a compromise economic recovery bill with “Solar Industry Ready to Hire and Create Growth Opportunities with Economic Recovery Package” and said: Three provisions in the bill are critical for solar: Renewable Energy Grant Program:  Offers Dept. of Energy grants equal to 30 percent of the cost of solar projects started in

Feed-in Tariffs: Solar FiT for Gainesville, Florida!

A Solar Photovoltaic Incentive Policy We Can Believe In. Which US state will enact the first Feed-in Tariff (FiT)? Triangulate between Orlando, Jacksonville, and Tallahassee to find Gainesville, Florida USA. Photovoltaic advocates won’t need fancy geometry to locate Gainesville after “Commission gives its approval to feed-in tariff for solar power” by Megan Rolland for The Gainesville Sun. Per the Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) Friday, February 6, 2009, announcement “Leading the Nation: GRU’s Solar Feed-in-Tariff”, the Gainesville City Commission: gave unanimous

Photovoltaic Conference and Exhibition Preview 2009

Significant photovoltaic conferences and events in 2009. In chronological order, here are the conferences I am interested in following or covering in 2009. Given that visibility thing, I’m not making plans beyond PHOTON’s Technology Show. As last year (Part 2 update), my focus remains technical conferences and business to business trade shows, not regional marketing or sales events. However, I am still considering smaller technical conferences in lieu of the larger mega events because of repetitive content. There is little location alignment among the eleven events although the San Francisco Bay area and Munich have two events each.

Solar Grant: What is a Refundable Renewable Energy Tax Credit?

ITC (Investment Tax Credit) Myopia knows no bounds. House Committee on Ways and Means passes a renewable Grant Program in lieu of the ITC. With apologies to Jeopardy!, the above headline is phrased in the quiz show’s answer and question format, and the category must be Solar and Renewable Energy Incentive Policies. In “SOLAR AND WIND READY TO LEAD NEW CLEAN ENERGY ECONOMY”, the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) reiterated their call to make renewable tax incentives refundable. I first blogged about this in ITC Myopia: New Solar Investment Tax Credit Deficiencies Exposed! A Refundable Tax Credit

ITC Myopia: New Solar Investment Tax Credit Deficiencies Exposed!

Be careful what you wish for… The SEIA (Solar Energy Industries Association) joins the US renewable energy cohort in asking for Investment Tax Credit “adjustments”. When I read “Investment in Renewables Will Lead to US Economic Recovery, Leaders Say” by Jennifer Runyon at RenewableEnergyWorld.com and checked the press release, “Renewable Energy Industries Ready to Lead U.S. Economic Recovery”, I thought this might not be an SEIA reversal of fortune. I was wrong. Given the burst of the Housing bubble and subsequent credit crunch, is it any wonder the appetite for creative financing investment tax credits has dried up
