SPI 09: Concentrating PhotoVoltaics Highlights

CPV News from MASDAR trumps Solar Power International 09.

I was looking forward to the SPI 09 Concentrating Photovoltaics (CPV) session moderated by Greentech Media Senior Analyst Eric Wesoff. For once, I had a few questions prepared in advance. When I sat down, I thought I was being mercenary sitting right next to the microphone front and center. However, as questions were opened to the floor, I still had to rush to beat out two other inquisitors to ask the first question.

SolFocus, Inc. Q: Ed Gunther (moi!) said: “I have a question for Mr. Crowley. I was wondering if you could give us an update on the project with the Samaras Group. I believe it was supposed to start installing in the summer, and there’s supposed be power delivery by

Mesa Energy picks SolFocus for 92 kiloWatt CPV Installation

Concentrator Photovoltaic (CPV) Showcase project using SolFocus has an installed cost of $6.04 per Watt (W). When I first saw “SolFocus Receives Award from National Renewable Energy Laboratory”, I missed the subheading, “City of Mesa, Arizona to Serve as First Showcase of Technology Developed in the DOE/NREL PV Incubator Program”. Only later in Google Alerts did I notice “Solar Panels to Produce Power, Boost Local Economy” which states: The City of Mesa announced an agreement with SolFocus, Inc. to build 11 concentrating photovoltaic solar arrays, which will help the City meet its energy needs, foster the development of solar technologies and invest in Mesa’s economy. The next

GreenWing Energy interview about the SolFocus CPV Agreement

Understanding GreenWing Energy’s commitment to solar and SolFocus Concentrator Photovoltaic (CPV) systems.

From SolFocus 8.4kW SF-1100S-CPV-28 systemGreenWing Energy signs agreement with SolFocus for utility scale deployments of CPV” by Emma Hughes at PV-tech.org echoed my concerns when I first saw this announcement:

Financial details of the agreement, location of the projects, and timing of the developments were not disclosed.… Read More >>

Intersolar North America

[San Francisco, California USA] Observing the obvious. I managed to spend some time at Intersolar North America 2009 this week in San Francisco. Applied Materials, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMAT) From Intersolar North America The big news was US President Barack Obama somehow finding the time to visit Applied Materials before the Major League Baseball 2009 All-Star Game in St. Louis, Missouri. A crowd formed to understand how AMAT is driving down cost per watt. From Intersolar North America Solyndra, Inc. I noticed Michael Kanellos take a cameraperson over to

SolFocus scales CPV Series C to $77.6 Million

Ramping and Scaling Concentrator PhotoVoltaic (CPV) Systems. Expanding manufacturing from 0.5 MW (MegaWatt) in 2008, to over 10 MW shipped in 2009, and 50 MW capacity by 2011. Well, it is clear anyone reporting on Tuesday’s “Haywood Dorland Energy Capital, LLC, Invests in SolFocus, Inc., the Leading Developer of Advanced Concentrator PV Solar Technologies” didn’t do their due diligence. Today with “SolFocus Raises over $77 Million in Series C Funding”, SolFocus Inc. said it closed the Series C round. About six months ago on January 8, 2009, with “SolFocus Raises $47.5M for Concentrating PV Solar” by Katie Fehrenbacher at Earth2Tech, SolFocus announced the

State of the CPV Consortium – Part 2

“Is the CPV (Concentrator PhotoVoltaics) Industry Ready to Ramp?” More CPV Myth Busting plus CPV Environmental Positives. Even as I finished the “State of the CPV Consortium” post, I knew a follow up was required to complete the State of CPV address. I begin here with the CPV forecast from the presentation by CPV Consortium Chairman/Director Nancy Hartsoch. From PV Industry Forum 2009 As you can see in the above Picasa photo, PHOTON International claims 10 MW (MegaWatts) of CPV was installed in 2008. However, Ms. Hartsoch thought this was not all High Concentration PhotoVoltaics (HCPV) but was dominated by silicon based concentrators. For instance, “Opportunities and Challenges for

State of the CPV Consortium

“Is the CPV (Concentrator PhotoVoltaics) Industry Ready to Ramp?” LCOE (Levelized Cost of Energy) but what does it cost to install capacity? From PV Industry Forum 2009 On the second day of the PV Industry Forum 2009, SolFocus VP Marketing Nancy Hartsoch, in her role as CPV Consortium Chairman/Director, presented “Concentrator PV Advanced Technology Becomes Commercial Energy Solution” to kick off the misnamed Session 6: Silicon PV Outlook – Concentrating PV. While I was irked (it wasn’t just me) by the three CPV PR movie clips, Technology Overview

SolFocus partners for 200 MWp Concentrator PhotoVoltaic Project at Pueblo Chemical Depot

Project proposed by the Helios Energy Partners, LLC, consortium including KRS Energy, SolFocus, and an unnamed financial company. Although “SolFocus and Samaras Expand Solar Concentrator Photovoltaic (CPV) Project in Greece from 1.6MW to 10MW” was announced on Monday, a bigger project progressed forward in Pueblo, Colorado USA, last week.

On Sunday, March 8, 2009, The Pueblo Chieftain Editorial "Sun city?" said: Last week, the county commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding with Helios Energy Partners that could eventually lead to a $900 million investment in a 200-megawatt solar array. The county’s role comes because

KGO Radio Solar Project Update: SolFocus Installed!

Inspections expected later this week.

Last week, I noticed Stay Tuned! by Art Lebermann in the KGO Solar Blog chronicling the assembly and installation of the SolFocus, Inc., CPV (Concentrating PhotoVoltaic) solar arrays. Per SolFocus today, the inspections by the city of Fremont should be completed this week and then the solar arrays can go live.

Just after I posted the previous KGO Radio Solar Project Update: SolFocus install delayed on May 2, 2008, I added a comment with SolFocus clarifications to the post:

Nancy Hartsoch, SolFocus Vice President, Corporate Marketing, responded to my questions about the KGO Solar project earlier this week.
